O.U.C.H. Convention 2006 Video

Here is a short video diary of the 2006 convention for your enjoyment and information.

At Milcon, between Lori Choyce's presentation and Svenn's presentation, we were entertained by ASB's daughter Teresa and the Badger Band. Everyone enjoyed it - some more than others...LOL

Chicken Dance Anyone?

The band had us all on our feet and drew hotel staff and guests from all around, smiling and clapping and dancing.

But wait, who's the guest conductor?

Of course it wasn't all fun and games. There was a serious side as well. Those who wished to do so participated in the Zomig NS study right there at the convention.

Lori Choyce (NECH) announced a new clinical trial coming out around the end of the year, studying Civimide as a preventative.:

Supporters are probably the most important people in ours lives. Yes we see the doctors once in a while and get this or that med, but our supporters keep us going. They advocate for us with our doctors, console us when we are feeling down and kick us in the ass when we start letting things get to us.

At the beginning of Svenn's presentation, he had us do something we should be doing every day.

Dr. Sewell drove home the point that we must actively advocate for ourselves in order with this little exercise:

He showed us that one or two people CAN make a difference:

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/sewell-videohelps.wmv

Dr. Sewell kind of stepped in it a little bit when talking about the age of CH onset:

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/sewell-stepsinit.wmv

Dr. Sewell praised the creation of C.H.A.T.S. He stated there was no way he could have gotten a grant to have the software written, but because of the activism by OUCH members, there was a useful tool for collecting data. It has already been approved for use by the Harvard IRB and should be put into use shortly. Dr. Sewell made the following statement:

Way to go guys!

Finally, Dr. Sewell announced that because of pilot data provided by Clusterbusters and members of the cluster headache community, he would be submitting grant paperwork for a Kudzu trial this October.

Dr Halpern spoke mainly of the issues involved in getting the psilocybin study going. He also spoke to some of the legal issues, such as seeds:

Dr. Halpern explains that this type of research could be dangerous to a research career.

Dr Halpern describes the cost of getting this study through drug development

Dr Halpern explains that the study will likely get no federal money

Feeling at first meeting with CB.

Why continue?

We have a friend? in the DEA & FDA..

Basically, Dr. Halpern says there are many legal, political and financial hurdles in the way and it will take more time than we think it should, but there is a possibility that this study could take place and lead to an effective treatment for CH. While we are waiting, advocacy groups need to keep it in the public eye and keep the focus on the medical aspects of psilocybin/lsd.

Dr. Sewell re-interjects a note of hope

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/sewell-halpern-hope.wmv

So what should OUCH's position be on psilocybin/lsd?

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/sewell-halpern-ouchposition.wmv

The underlying theme of all speakers during the convention was advocacy. We need to educate the public and those doctors who are unfamiliar with CH. We need to be more active in getting CH in the public eye (so to speak) and in raising money for research.

Saturday, after the last of the presentations, there was our banquet, awards ceremony, entertainment and auction.

The first award: The Bob Kipple Award for Service to the Cluster Headache Community:

Dialuppers, I apologize for the size of this (2.45MB). I cut out a lot of applause and extra stuff to get down this far.

And that was it - or was it? Another award got snuck into the program presented by Michelle Adamson:

Next came the entertainment and it definitely was entertaining. In the "game show," contestants Donna, Blake and Helen were blindfolded and had to ask yes or no questions to guess the name, occupation and whether the subjects - Jasmyn & Bob (BlueMeanie) - were episodic or chronic.

Helen asked Jas if she was shorter than her. Donna replied, "No one's shorter than you." Helen replied...well, watch her reply

Helen revels in asking a good question...

Donna congratulates Helen on her correct guess resulting in the famous "High Five"

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/1sthighfive.wmv

Blake couldn't wait to ask a question..

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/blake-gotagoodone.wmv

The crowd gets involved...

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/highfive.wmv

Blake doesn't like being told no...

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/blake-tiredofhim.wmv

Donna asks, "Is this my water?" uh, Donna...he's blindfolded...

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/isthismywater.wmv

The game ended with everyone giving a high five

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/allhighfive.wmv

Just gotta do this. Sorry Donna...

Well, this has been a fun trip down memory lane. I'm going to wrap up with a short montage from the auction (this does not cover all the items auctioned)...

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/auction1.wmv

and the Battle for the Shiney...

http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings/milcon06/shineywar.wmv

As has been said many times, if you've never met another clusterhead, you just HAVE to and the OUCH Convention is the perfect place to do so. Please make plans to be in Richmond for the 2007 OUCH Convention. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Oh, yeah... Hey Donna! High Five!!!
